What is Supported Living?

Georgia Options supports people with disabilities

to live in their own homes and to have typical life experiences.

Supported Living means having choices and control over where you live, with whom you live, and how you live your life. It means having a voice in choosing your own staff, determining your own goals, and deciding how you spend your own time and money. It means becoming an active citizen through a job, volunteer work, church and club membership, or being a good neighbor. It means having the necessary support to live a typical life as a contributing and valued member of the community.

The following chart comes from John O'Brien's article: "Supported Living: What's the Difference?" (1993).

Text Box: Only when you stand with people with developmental disabilities,
recognizing their common humanity,
honoring their desires to make a life for themselves,
and struggling with them to create new opportunities,
can you begin to understand supported living.
- John O’ Brien
